Punjab Government asked to open scholarship portal for students from the Scheduled Caste

For the academic year, 2020-21, the Department of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Class, Punjab Government has been urged to open Dr. Ambedkar’s Scholarship Portal portal for the students from the Scheduled Caste. The proposition has been put forward by Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA). Dr. Anshu Kataria, President, PUCA, spoke about the same and said that in the past the portal usually opened in the months of August or September allowing the students to apply for scholarship for the next academic session. This year, however, the process is delayed by 3 months.

PUCA Senior Vice President, Amit Sharma, also shared his thoughts on the matter. He said that the colleges so far have admitted SC students without charging fees as per the directions of the State Government. However, if the scholarship portal is not opened at the earliest, then the unaided colleges in the state of Punjab will be forced to charge fees from the students of the Scheduled Caste category. This is because several Government universities have already released the schedule for the final examination.

The Punjab Government offers a Post Matric Scholarship scheme for the students of the SC category. The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to the Scheduled Caste students studying at post matriculation or post-secondary stage to enable them to complete their education pursued in recognized institutions. Scholarships are awarded to the students whose parents/guardians’ income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 2,50,000/- per annum. The scholarship allows over 3 lakh students to pursue education post matriculation.
